The Role

This position will support the applications of GIS and remote sensing products for the development, expansion and validation of ecosecurities’ Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) program within internationally recognised voluntary carbon standards.


The role will report to the APAC NBS Technical Specialist (GIS and Remote Sensing). To support ecosecurities’ NBS projects, he/she will use GIS and remote sensing tools and processes to monitor and predict changes (e.g. land use and landcover, degradation, deforestation, vegetation health, carbon stocks, GHG emissions, etc.) in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector.


The role may be required to provide analysis, services, and products to ecosecurities community energy and renewable energy projects across the Asia-Pacific and will be integrated into the ecosecurities GIS teams operating across Africa and Latin America.

Key Accountabilities

  • Produce GIS products that quantify land use change, carbon and emission profiles and geospatially represent nature-based solution outcomes in accordance with internationally recognised voluntary carbon market standards and methodologies.

  • Support the NBS Technical Specialist (GIS and Remote Sensing) to acquire, manage and analyse data (geospatial and field) in support of NBS project development, analysis, quantification and validation.

  • Use remote sensing and GIS techniques to gather and analysis freely available remote sensing data on the landscape scale

  • Generate internal and external cartographic products and presentations

  • Conduct carbon accounting activities in accordance to the voluntary carbon standards requirements (e.g. VCS guidelines and CCBS)

  • Remain current on advanced GIS and Remote Sensing topics.

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the APAC team and the global GIS teams.

  • Other task as directed by the NBS Technical Advisor (GIS and Remote Sensing) for APAC.


Qualifications & Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, environmental science, climate science, or other related fields.

  • 2-5 years' work experience in GIS software applications (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine) and software systems (e.g. Erdas, Esri)

  • Experienced in applying GIS and remote sensing techniques to monitor and predict changes in the AFOLU sector.

  • Demonstrated knowledge on forest conservation, carbon accounting, carbon standards and certification processes, primarily VCS and CCB Standards.

  • Proficient knowledge of research and statistical analyses.

  • Proven team player able to work effectively across cultures and within organizations as well as ability to work independently.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


  • Master's degree in environmental science, climate science, geography or related fields.

  • Experience in scripting languages (e.g. R, Python, GDAL) and in leveraging new applications.

  • Experience in ecological field methods (especially forest ecosystems) including the design and implementation of field plot inventory methods and the processing and analysis of primary field data.

  • Expertise in data collection, analysis, and interpretation and communication of results to a broad set of stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant climate and carbon science literature.

  • Proficient in an Asia-Pacific language outside English.
